I’ve never seen the Shiprock, but when I came across photographs of that massive, jagged mountain, I knew I had to make it the subject of my next painting. It’s such an ominous land mass, and the blood-red color of the paint makes it even more so. The title combined with the fierce look on the Space Cowgirl’s face are meant to evoke mourning and a desire for revenge. While the Shiprock is still on Navajo land, this country was taken by the blood of the families who were here first, and I wanted to pay homage to that.
